I don't know why the repro scene in the UK is so good, but man is it annoying that some of the very very most accurate reproduction vintage would cost me like 50 goddamn dollars in shipping and also would be royal mail so who knows if it would show.
And it's all "straight across." It's 90% straight-up, reproduction of shit that was made from the 1940s to the 1960s. Love that. Most of what we have in the US is a very twee, "pinup" take on the style. There is nothing wrong on god's green and verdant earth with wearing a fit and flare swing dress with a fuckin Fraggle Rock print, but that is not how I want to live my life. I want to look like I could have stepped onto the street in 1954 or some shit. (With some minor styling differences, I'm not a purist by any means, I'm just not into being CUTESY. I'm playing it straight.) And in the US, we just do NOT have the wide variety of options for that--we have shit like Modcloth, Unique Vintage, etc. Which in addition to being cheaply made, mostly, is all that twee stuff, or all fucking black.
I do not mind spending money on my clothes! The secret to my 'success' is I buy very few items of clothing a year and I spend MONEY on them. At this stage in my life, I am looking to refine my wardrobe, not build it. I am swapping out less nice pieces for better ones. But JESUS, does it make me choke to save up 90 bucks and then have 50 bucks in shipping on top of it.
And yeah, you actually can find the stuff I'm looking for at clothiers who do not specialize in reproduction. I got my Kitty Hepburn style pants and vest from Banana fucking Republic, really nice, thick 80% wool blend. Exactly what I wanted. But the trouble is *I* know the words I am looking for, but especially resellers DO NOT. I know what a dolman sleeve blouse is, but does Chaz in Boca Raton selling a silk blend top that I DO WANT? No! Not often!
And GOD, every time I look on ebay and see how AMAZINGLY CHEAP the resale market is on this stuff in the UK, I SCREAM. You are all so fucking spoiled cry cry cry.

Sometimes as a non-binary person you end up finding the randomest modes of dress that give you gender euphoria: like vintage lesbian.
A pinup stevedore, if you will. (Turban and blouse from Freddies of Pinewood, overalls made from Folkwear's Rosie the Riveter set, makeup mainly from Notoriously Morbid.)

Well, that was fun! At least it was for me, I hope you guys enjoyed it too, biggest thanks to everyone who participated âĽ
13 works were added to the collection over the month, so here is a recap!
Sweet Amnesia by Myulalie for @rirren [E, 4 374 words]
Ian disappears, and Alex gets into his head to hire âIanâs old army buddyâ to rescue his uncle. Yassen Gregorovich comes with a price.
Adjournment by iceblyecyanide for @strangesoulmates [T, 5 399 words]
âDid no one ever tell you that itâs impolite to enter someoneâs room without invitation, Alex Rider?â Chess prodigy Alex Rider is attending the 1981 Moscow Invitational when a moment of curiosity leads him into trouble, and lands him an impromptu rematch with the World Champion, Soviet Grandmaster Yassen Gregorovich.
The Boy in the Ice by Myulalie for @lastlymatt [T, 3 932 words]
Project IceX takes Yassen to a lab in Siberia in order to relive a miraculously preserved humanoid, seemingly older than humanity itself.
I don't want to lose you again by turtle_snail for @shehungthemoon [T, 7 461 words]
Alex gets a phone call from the hospital saying that his uncle was in a bad accident. Except, Ian Rider died four years agoâŚ
A Surprising Holiday by TheOtherBlue for @myulalie [E, 3 487 words]
Alex runs into Yassen while on holiday in Greece and sees a chance to flip the script of their encounters. Yassen isn't entirely convinced, but is willing to play along.
The Monster in the Cellar by Too_Many_Rooks for @icebluecyanide [Not Rated, 5 104 words]
'Perhaps heâd lied to himself as much as heâd lied to MI6. Every report theyâd demanded had read the same; his nephew was normal, and safe, and happy, and they couldnât have him. Ian was his parent in every way that mattered, not a prison warden for the thing that might lurk inside him. No one would take his kid away from him. But the snarling, blood-stained, monster, barely conscious with all his hate and his hunger that was chained up in their basement didnât much resemble the sweet little boy whoâd run to greet him at the door when he returned from long overseas missions, or the child whoâd stare with wide-eyed joy and fascination as Ian showed him the world, nor even the stroppy tween who liked to complain about how boring and embarrassing his guardian was.' Ian is forced to enact a plan he'd been desperate to avoid when he returns home one day to find his nephew... changed.
Lot 14 by Rirren for @lastlymatt [E, 2 509 words]
Blind and deaf, Alex Rider is helpless as he is auctioned off.
Pinewood by turtle_snail [T, 5 166 words]
Alex and Freddy are captured by nightshade, the situation is starting to seem dire and maybe Alex canât sass his way out of this one.
A different kind of sacrifice by limnal for @strangesoulmates [E, 4 346 words]
Alex, a young Celt, has been chosen to be handfasted with Yassen, a druid known for his love of blood magic and human sacrifice. There are expectations to fulfill this night.
A Winter Offering by LastlyMatt for @myulalie [E, 4 561 words]
In order for the village to make it through winter, Alex has been chosen as a sacrifice for the spirit of the woods.
Salt Water by Myulalie for @shehungthemoon [E, 4 618 words]
Five times Alex forces Yassenâs hand (and gets away with it).
Disciplinary Action by icebluecyanide for @lastlymatt [M, 4 475 words]
General Alexei Sarov makes good on his promise to have Alex whipped. "There will be no more outbursts," Sarov told him, his tone brooking no disobedience. "You will be quiet, and you will watch. And when Juan's punishment is over, you will take his place." Written for FebuWhump Day 24: "I'm doing this because I care about you" and the Alex in Chains prompt "Alex tied up in front of an audience".
The Mystery Suitor by turtle_snail for @myulalie [M, 8 311 words]
âIâll think this is an amazing deal. It will bring prosperity to both our kingdoms. I think Prince Alex can agree.â He heard Ian say. Alex's curiosity doubled. He caught his name being included in some deal Ian was making on his behalf. âWhat was that about?â Alex demanded, not hiding the fact that he was eavesdropping seconds before. âYou have a suitor.â Ian said, "I just got a marriage proposal.â
What a way to start the year! Thank you to all the participants, once again, and happy reading to anyone catching up now âĽ
Feel free to keep browsing through the wishlists and gift something to someone even if the event is over, I'll be happy to reblog it here if you do!

Thereâs always some level of interest in how I source my clothes since I have a very particular style, and I have champagne taste on a...maybe no beer budget, but certainly box wine. So every so often iâll try to remember to post a photo and how I got everything, how much it cost, etc.
ANYWAY! I was not the first owner of any of this.
Pants: Freddieâs of Pinewood, a vintage repro company, based in the Uk (boo!) obtained through a buy/sell Freddieâs group, $45.00
T-shirt: Cynthia Rowley, a thicker t-shirt that I find lasts a bit better, 7 or 8 dollars through thredup.com Here is a referral link that gives you ten bucks off, and I get ten bucks if you buy. I do use them, obviously, but full disclosure.Â
sweater: My local vintage store, true vintage, find of the fucking century $15.00 because she had it marked as a youth sweater when itâs actually just an XS crop sweater.

Full Ben Whishaw Interview in Sunday Times Magazine
Ben Whishaw, the voice of Paddington, the millennial Q in the Bond films, the next generation of Mr Banks in Disneyâs epic Mary Poppins reboot, is fresh off the plane from LA. He is wearing a navy shirt, dark wool trousers and a fluffy knitted hat over his lush curls. Itâs a strange combination of quirkiness and elegance. At the start of the year he won a Golden Globe and a Criticsâ Choice award for his captivating portrayal of Norman Scott opposite Hugh Grantâs Jeremy Thorpe in A Very English Scandal. Of course he says he didnât expect to win, and of course he says it feels great, but when I ask if this recognition from Hollywood means heâll spend more time out there, he says: âNo idea. I donât feel itâs my world. I just sort of dropped in and it was a lovely thing. I would like to drop in more often. Maybe it opens doors. I guess weâll see.â
For now, itâs back to the day job. Whishaw, 38, is rehearsing a play called Norma Jeane Baker of Troy, in which he plays a man who likes to dress up as Marilyn Monroe. âWe just got the costumes,â he says. âI wear a dress thatâs a replica of the one she wore in The Seven Year Itch â the white one where the wind comes up. Theyâve also given me the bum, hips and breasts. I donât think theyâre as big as Marilynâs, but theyâre proportionate to my body. Itâs a strange thing. Iâm not playing Marilyn, Iâm playing a man whoâs infatuated with her. The play is set in the year she died and heâs in mourning for her. Apparently there was a spate of copycat suicides that year.â
To research the role, Whishaw has been reading a book called Fragments. âItâs bits of Marilynâs diary, notes on hotel paper, poetry,â he says. âShe writes beautifully. Arthur Miller was here with her when they were doing the film The Prince and the Showgirl, and she opened his diary and read about how disappointed he was with her, how embarrassed he was being around his intellectual friends with her. Apparently this was devastating to Marilyn. All these men say how difficult she was. It makes you want to strangle them. But she really was amazing. She had a lot going on, a lot of sadness on her plate, poor darling. To be a star in that star system and those men.â
If she had been born 50 years later, does he think she would have been part of the #MeToo movement? âIâm sure she would have. Iâve been listening to interviews with her. She doesnât seem afraid of anything.â
Fearless and vulnerable. Itâs a contradiction that could possibly describe both of them. âYes,â he smiles.
Almost 15 years have passed since Whishaw, fresh out of Rada, was acclaimed as one of the best ever Hamlets in the Trevor Nunn production at the Old Vic. His portrayal earned him an Olivier nomination and opened the door to film and television roles. He voiced Michael Bondâs Peruvian stowaway bear in the two recent Paddington films and is lined up for a third, as well as an animated TV series for Nickelodeon. Perhaps his best known role is Q in the Bond films Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015). As soon as heâs finished his Marilyn, he will begin shooting the next one, though no one in a Bond movie can tell you in advance what itâs going to be like. âI think theyâre probably trying to figure out what to do with the storyline,â he says. âAt least I know that my character is the same. Someone did tell me there might be a scene with Qâs cats.â
I immediately want to sort out an audition for my cat Roger Moore.
âDoes Roger travel?â he asks. âCould he go to Pinewood? And can he cock an eyebrow?â
Yes, he can. Thatâs why heâs called Roger Moore.
âIâll get onto Barbara Broccoli about it,â he says.
Whishaw has created an ever-widening niche for himself â he has made room in film, theatre and television for malleable, sensitive male characters that are sometimes described as androgynous, but what they really are is sexually ambiguous.
âDo you think Iâm androgynous? I think Iâm quite male-looking. Androgyny is different to non-binary, but I hate all these labels. I get mixed up.â
Itâs true, there are many labels; nonetheless Whishaw is a 21st-century man. When you think of those macho actors of the last century, men like Rock Hudson, who revealed he was gay only when he was dying of Aids, it seems so different now.
Whishaw entered a civil partnership with the Australian composer Mark Bradshaw in 2012, but for a long time he did not discuss his private life. He would say things like, âAn actor shouldnât reveal their sexuality because it pigeonholes them.â Once he had come to terms with it himself, however, hiding it became difficult in a different way. âPeople assume thereâs some juicy secret,â he says. âBut I donât agree any more with that statement [about being pigeonholed]. I donât think itâs the be-all and end-all, and since revealing my sexuality I havenât had any negative effects.â
Perhaps thatâs because he is such a skilful actor, perhaps the pigeonholes arenât as rigid as they used to be, or perhaps the revelation has actually helped him. He shrugs. He doesnât mind talking about it now, itâs just he canât be conclusive.
At one point, Whishaw was lined up to play Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, although he was never given a contract or confirmed officially. Various versions of the biopic had been on the cards for about 10 years. Sacha Baron Cohen was in the frame first of all, then Whishaw, and ultimately Rami Malek. The film has been accused of not being âgay enoughâ, but, for all the criticism, Malekâs career-defining role won him an Oscar.
We talk about how hard it was for Mercury to admit that he was gay and how he would refer to himself as bisexual. But then perhaps he was. He certainly had sexual relationships with women. âI think itâs very unfair when people say theyâre bisexual and theyâre accused of being gay really,â Whishaw says. âIf weâre honest about these things, perhaps most people are on a spectrum.â
Whatever the risks he took in revealing his sexuality to the public, Whishaw found it much harder coming out to his family. âIâve gone through a few difficult things,â he says. âThere was a moment in my early twenties when I did not feel very good about myself. It was to do with my sexuality and not knowing how to be myself and hating myself. I did know [my sexuality], I just couldnât tell anyone.â
When he eventually told his parents, they werenât surprised, but he still struggled. He sought therapy. âIt really did help,â he says.
He carries himself with such a sense of otherness that I am surprised to learn he is a twin. âWe were born on the same day and we came out of the same place at the same time, but we are totally unalike,â he says. âPerhaps you can see we are related, but we donât look alike. Heâs blond. He came out first and was very pink and chubby. And I was this squashed, dark thing that popped out a few moments after. We were so different, but we were always dressed the same and taken everywhere together, even to things I was not interested in, like football. So Iâve always defined myself by him, but in opposition to him. I like everything different to him. Thereâs not a single thing we have in common, except we both liked the scary rides if we were taken to a park.â
Donât twins normally have a kind of supernatural understanding? âNo. No understanding, no telepathy. When I told him [about being gay], he wasnât surprised, of course, but still.â
He notices a black crystal around my neck and I explain that it was given to me by my hypnotherapist.
âIâd like to try hypnotherapy,â he says. For what? âSmoking,â he says. âItâs so frowned upon. You feel ostracised from the world if you smoke. And thereâs the hair twiddling thing.â He starts twiddling his hair. âIâve probably been doing this for the whole interview.â He hasnât, but apparently itâs been a lifelong habit. âIâve done it since I was a baby. I donât know why I do it.â
I recall the title of a Peter Cook anthology: Tragically, I Was an Only Twin. Thatâs what Whishaw seems like. I canât imagine him with a brother. âMy dad says if my brother and I were one person we would be an amazing, perfect human,â he replies.
Itâs often reported that his father works in IT, but thatâs not true. âHe lives in the countryside and raises chickens behind a farm. He used to be a footballer and he now works in sports with young people. Heâs not an IT person at all,â Whishaw laughs. His mother works in cosmetics. They split up when he was a young boy, but he has good relationships with both of them. He talks about them with love.
The last time we met, Whishaw told me he was afraid of meeting people. âI havenât got over that,â he says. âI love people, but Iâm just shy of meeting new people, especially when theyâre famous.â
In particular, he was bashful around Meryl Streep, whom he starred alongside in Mary Poppins. âIâm so completely left speechless when Iâm in the same room as her. Do you never feel that speechlessness come on you?â he asks sweetly. âEven though she seemed to be the nicest person, I was very timid and shy around her.â
Itâs odd how someone so shy can look so confident â smouldering even â on screen.
He walks off in the furry hat that makes him look part man, part mole. Itâs certainly a statement. But perhaps the most curious thing about Whishaw is weâll never entirely know what that statement is.
